Ryan Weathers saw his no-hit bid slip away in the seventh inning, and the New York Yankees suffered their fourth consecutive defeat, losing 3-2 to the Baltimore Orioles on Monday night.
Making his first start since May 2 after a severe viral infection caused him to lose nine pounds, Weathers carried a no-hitter and a 2-0 lead into the seventh at Camden Yards. The left-hander allowed only three walks through six innings, but Adley Rutschman led off the seventh with a single up the middle, ending the no-hit chance.
After Pete Alonso grounded out, Tyler O’Neill walked, and Yankees manager Aaron Boone brought in reliever Brent Headrick. Coby Mayo launched Headrick’s third pitch into the left-field seats for a three-run homer, putting the Orioles ahead 3-2.
“It’s definitely been a rough couple of weeks,” Weathers said afterward. He threw 101 pitches in his return from a virus that gave him a 102-degree fever.
The Yankees had won 16 of 19 games before this skid, including a four-game sweep of the Orioles by a combined 39-10 score. But Baltimore, now below .500, turned the tables this time.
The game ended on a controversial replay review. With two outs in the ninth, pinch-runner José Caballero was called safe at second on an attempted steal, but the Orioles challenged, and the call was overturned—second baseman Blaze Alexander had made the tag. The reversal sealed another frustrating loss for New York.
