Derbyshire 604-7 dec: Guest 141, Andersson 106, Jewell 94; Conway 3-102
Northamptonshire 228 & 263: Bartlett 65*, McSweeney 62; Chappell 4-53
Derbyshire (23 pts) beat Northamptonshire (1 pt) by an innings and 113 runs
Zak Chappell and Shoaib Bashir propelled Derbyshire to their first win of the season, overcoming a resilient Northamptonshire lower order on the final day of their Division Two clash. Fast bowler Chappell recorded figures of 4-53, while England spinner Bashir claimed 3-70 as the visitors were bowled out for 263, sealing a commanding victory by an innings and 113 runs deep into the final session.
George Bartlett remained unbeaten on 65 off 175 balls, and Nathan McSweeney batted for nearly three and a half hours for his 62, but their efforts were insufficient to deny Derbyshire a 23-point haul. Northamptonshire left with just a single point.
Despite early morning rain, play started on time under cloudy skies with floodlights aiding the bowling conditions. Movement was on offer for the seamers, and although Harry Conway survived for 20 minutes, an Aitchison delivery found his outside edge in the fifth over of the day.
Calvin Harrison, who had batted for over five hours in the first innings, again showed the application his side needed until Bashir struck in his second over. A turning delivery caught Harrison’s edge (37), and Wayne Madsen held a sharp catch at slip, dealing a heavy blow to Northamptonshire’s survival hopes.
Derbyshire struck again in the next over when Saif Zaib drove loosely at a Chappell delivery he could have left and was caught behind. It was a poor shot given the situation, and another followed in the second over after lunch. James Sales (11) aimed a big drive at Bashir the ball after hitting him for four, only to edge to Madsen at slip.
Northamptonshire desperately needed a partnership, and McSweeney and Bartlett provided one, frustrating the hosts for 25 overs with sound judgment. McSweeney took a painful blow on the hand before edging Rory Haydon just past second slip to reach fifty, then survived a sharp chance to short leg on 62. The reprieve did not prove costly as Chappell had him caught behind down the leg side three overs before tea.
Chappell brought Derbyshire to the brink of victory when Lewis McManus played defensively but saw the ball spin back onto his stumps, followed by Ben Sanderson being lbw. Northants refused to go quietly, with George Scrimshaw staying with Bartlett for 20 overs, raising hopes of a remarkable escape. However, Martin Andersson pinned Scrimshaw lbw with a full-length ball with only 11 overs remaining, wrapping up an absorbing day of County Championship cricket.
